Oyster reef

Like mussel beds, oyster reefs are solid structures on the seabed that filter large amounts of water, improve its quality and provide a habitat for many organisms. They also act as natural breakwaters. In the North and Baltic Seas, these reefs are almost entirely made up of introduced Pacific oysters. However, the AWI breeding station in Helgoland is running a project to reintroduce the European oyster.
