Coral bleaching

Coral bleaching occurs when corals shed their symbiotic algae, which they need to survive, due to stress — typically caused by excessively high water temperatures. These algae provide the corals with energy and colour. Without them, the corals often starve. Although bleaching does not mean immediate death, it severely weakens the animals. Coral bleaching is becoming increasingly common worldwide as a result of climate change. Measures to protect the global climate are essential to preserve coral reefs.
