Marine Protection

Marine protection involves taking measures to conserve and sustainably use marine ecosystems. Key instruments include marine protected areas, in which human activities are regulated or prohibited. Currently, however, only around 3 per cent of the global ocean area is fully protected as 'no-take zones'. The international community aims to protect 30 per cent of the ocean's surface by 2030, with a third of this area subject to a complete ban on extraction.
