Algae

Algae are plants that grow in the ocean, in freshwater and on moist surfaces. They play a central role in marine ecosystems because they produce around half of the world's oxygen and form the basis of the marine food chain. Algae come in all sizes, from single-celled phytoplankton to giant kelp forests. Algae are an important resource for the blue economy, being used in the food industry, for biofuels, and in the pharmaceutical industry. Sustainable use of algae offers great potential for the future. As important as algae are, excessive algae blooms can also become problematic.
