Climate buffer

The term 'climate buffer' refers to the oceans' ability to absorb excess carbon dioxide (CO₂) and heat from the atmosphere, thereby mitigating the effects of climate change. Since the Industrial Revolution, the oceans have stored around a quarter of the CO₂ emissions released by humans. However, this natural process has its limits: rising temperatures and ocean acidification are impairing the oceans' ability to act as a buffer and endangering marine ecosystems.
