Illegal fishing
Illegal fishing poses a significant threat to fish stocks and marine ecosystems. Many species of fish are overfished. Other marine animals are also killed as bycatch, and habitats are severely affected. Illegal fishing involves disregarding fishing laws, such as fishing in protected areas or exceeding quotas. Although monitoring is carried out by international, national and regional actors, insufficient resources and corruption make effective control difficult.
