Sea Level Rise
The warming of the oceans and the melting of the polar ice caps are causing sea levels to rise globally. This endangers low-lying islands and coastal areas, home to a large proportion of the world's population. Various methods of coastal protection have been developed to mitigate this risk. Examples of natural coastal protection measures include seagrass meadows and mussel reefs, which slow down water currents, resulting in weaker waves hitting the coast during storm surges. Other measures include building higher dykes or constructing structures off the coast to hold back the water.
