Oxygen deficiency

Oxygen levels in the Baltic Sea and other marine regions are steadily decreasing due to climate change and increased nutrient levels. Warm water holds less oxygen, and nutrients originating from agriculture and ending up in the sea via rivers promote large algal blooms. The decomposition of these blooms consumes oxygen. This results in oxygen minimum zones where life is barely possible. This development endangers fish stocks and marine biodiversity, with direct consequences for the environment, economy, and coastal regions.
