Shipping

Shipping is the backbone of international trade, transporting more than 80 per cent of the world's traded goods. Modern freighters can carry up to 24,000 containers. Most routes connect industrial centres via fixed ocean lanes. Despite being more energy efficient than air travel, for example, shipping has a negative environmental impact due to exhaust gases and waste. However, sustainable solutions such as low-emission propulsion systems and shore power supply are currently being developed or implemented with the aim of making shipping more environmentally friendly.
