Seagrass
Seagrass grows in shallow coastal areas and forms dense meadows. These species-rich ecosystems fulfil important functions. They absorb CO₂, stabilise the seabed and improve water quality by retaining sediments. However, seagrass meadows in the North Sea and elsewhere are severely threatened by environmental changes and fungal infestation. Reintroducing seagrass is therefore important for research, but this is difficult without healthy existing populations.
