Deep sea
The deep sea refers to the cold, lightless and high-pressure areas of the oceans below approximately 200 metres. This region is difficult for humans to access, so it remains over 90 per cent unexplored. However, modern technologies such as remotely operated diving robots and autonomous underwater vehicles are enabling researchers to increasingly study these extreme habitats from a distance. Among other things, they are investigating hydrothermal vents and deep-sea plains, discovering new, unique ecosystems. At the same time, manganese nodules contain valuable metals and there is currently discussion about mining them.
