Diversity of species
Species diversity, also known as taxonomic diversity, refers to the variety of species within a habitat, as well as to the variety within a species. It is defined as the number of different organisms in a habitat. In marine ecosystems, species diversity contributes significantly to stability and performance. The loss of species can jeopardise the ecological functions of entire marine regions, with serious economic consequences. Biodiversity is threatened by factors such as overfishing and climate change.
