Oysters

Oysters are filter-feeding molluscs that fulfil an important ecological function. They purify the water, promote biodiversity, and stabilise sediments. The European oyster was originally native to the North Sea. However, it has been extinct since the 1920s. In the 1960s, the hardier Pacific oyster was introduced to breeding facilities as a replacement. But it also thrives outside the cages. Since then, it has spread throughout the North Sea, competing with mussels.
