Dunes

Dunes on coastal areas are formed when sand is transported by the wind and deposited behind natural or man-made obstacles. These natural barriers protect against storm surges and coastal erosion. Foredunes and white dunes are particularly important forms. These are stabilised by specialised plants, such as marram grass. Coastal dunes are valuable habitats that play a central role in the coastal ecosystem. In Germany, for example, they are typical of the East Frisian Islands.
