Coastal Protection
Coastal protection involves taking measures to safeguard coastal areas against flooding and erosion. There are two types of coastal protection: natural and technical. Natural protection is provided by features such as seagrass beds, salt marshes and mussel beds, which reduce the force of waves. Technical coastal protection includes structures such as dykes, dams and breakwaters, including groynes. In the face of rising sea levels, a sustainable strategy relies on a combination of both approaches to preserve coastal areas in the long term.
