Ammunition in the ocean

After the Second World War, remnants of munitions and chemical warfare agents were dumped in the oceans. It is estimated that around 1.6 million tonnes of Second World War munitions and approximately 5,090 tonnes of chemical warfare agents are lying on the seabed in German waters. Additionally, there are numerous unrecorded shells from battles and training exercises. These contaminated sites pose a risk to the marine environment and to humans. They must be salvaged or blown up, which in turn entails considerable environmental risks.
