Offshore wind energy

Offshore wind energy plays an important role in the renewable energy system, but its expansion can have a significant impact on the environment. The construction of wind farms and their connection to the mainland power grid disturbs the soil and, in some cases, irreversibly destroys benthic communities. However, this also creates new ecosystems; for instance, oyster beds form on and between the wind turbines.
