Ocean Acidification

Climate change is causing the oceans to absorb more CO₂, which makes the water more acidic. This particularly endangers calcifying organisms such as mussels, snails and corals. Their calcareous shells are attacked and partially dissolved in this environment. This has far-reaching consequences for marine ecosystems, as these species play important roles in the food web and the structure of habitats.
